Denitrification


Nova Q have developed a unique solution for denitrification in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems. It’s based on our experience in denitrification in Wastewater Treatment, where we regularly deal with high nitrate levels.

Our solution follows our wider circular-economy approach, utilising other waste streams from the RAS process to fuel the denitrification process.

This can utilise sludge outputs from the RAS (which, especially in brackish or saltwater RAS, have limited fertiliser value), while reducing nitrate stress on fish.

What is Denitrification?

The result of the key nitrification process is the accumulation of nitrate. While this is non-toxic to fish at low levels, sustained exposure to high levels of nitrate can cause stress and reduce welfare of farmed fish.

Denitrification is the process that strips the oxygen atoms from Nitrate (NO3) leaving nitrogen gas which can return to the atmosphere (Nitrogen forms 78% of the air we breath).

Denitrification is therefore the final step in the Nitrogen Cycle.
