When it comes to removing odours and unwanted contaminants in both airstreams and water, there
are few products as effective or more widely used than Activated Carbon.
For Nova Q, the leading Irish supplier of activated Carbon, developing the supply chain for activated
Carbon in an environmentally sustainable manner is a priority.
New for 2023 and subject to TFS approval, we will introduce a recycle option whereby qualifying spent activated Carbon can be returned for cleaning and reactivation. This reactivation is not only environmentally sustainable but more financially sustainable than sending spent Carbon to hazardous incineration.
Suitable for applications including:
Water treatment
Chemical filtering
Food processing
Pollution control
Remediation
Odour prevention
What is Activated Carbon?
Often called Active Carbon or Activated Charcoal, Activated Carbon is a highly porous form of
Carbon. Its porous structure makes it an excellent adsorbent, often used to remove contaminants or
odours by adsorbing them to the extensive carbon surface.
ADsorption is where liquid or gas particles are captured on a surface (different from ABsorption,
where liquid or gas particles are dissolved into a liquid). Activated Carbon provides a sustainable way
to remove pollutants from the environment, consistent with Nova Q’s core value to bring best-in-
class environmental sustainability solutions to our customers.
Most Activated Carbon is made from coal or coconut bases. It can be produced in various forms,
including granular, pellet, or powder. In addition, different combinations of chemical catalysts
(impregnants) can be added to improve functionality for the removal of specific contaminants in a
range of moisture and oxygen conditions.
Nova Q advises on the best type of Activated Carbon from our wide selection, which is most suitable

Product Range
Activated Carbon comes in many forms, and Nova Q specialises in Carbon from Coal, Coconut and
Wood in pellets, powder and granules. The Carbon arrives either virgin or impregnated. Nova Q
supplies Carbon in packs of 500g, 1kg, 20kg, 25kg and 500kg depending on the specific demand.
Services
Technical Support
Our technical support goes beyond the standard advice on the best Carbon for a particular
application. Instead, we look to understand the job, evaluate the product performance and always
keep open the possibility of using a re-activated or regenerated product as a more sustainable
alternative.
Carbon Sampling
It is often possible to avail of our sampling service, where we can sample Carbon and send it to the lab for review to assess expected life and validate if they are the most appropriate grade. For EPA-licenced facilities, we issue reports to accompany the sample results, demonstrating that the client is in control of their site emissions.
Filter Rental
With our partners, we have a wide range of filter units available to rent for both vapour and liquid
phase applications, from 2m3 to 30m3 options. These units arrive pre-loaded with the appropriate
Carbon and can be taken on short- and long-term rents.
Selection Advice
With so many grades of Carbon available, selecting the correct grade for the conditions is a core competence at Nova Q. We have over 10 years of experience supporting Irish clients in industrial, pharmaceutical, food, remediation and municipal environments. We also have the backing of the technical teams with our suppliers where required.
Turnkey Services
Working closely with our licenced contractors, we can offer complete turnkey services for the supply, changeover and removal/disposal of spent activated Carbon. This service now includes TFS preparation and transit storage pending lab testing of samples to ensure they meet the acceptance criteria for return to the reactivation facilities.
