What should be the minimum requirements for a solids filter?

Good capacity without blinding, low energy operation, simple cleaning procedure, low water usage, and long-lasting filter media. When we came across the Flocell XFM filter range at one of our Recirculating Aquaculture events, we immediately recognised the parallel opportunity in water treatment.

We have struggled for years with troublesome sand filters ahead of our Activated Carbon filters, and the Flocell XFM appeared to tick all the boxes.

Our first filter was installed in 2024 ahead of a bank of carbon filters, replacing daily backwashes with weekly or longer breaks between cleaning.

Now, Nova Q is the distribution partner for Flocell XFM Fines Media filters in Ireland. After the successful launch at the 2024 All Ireland Water and Wastewater Expo, we are helping clients resolve issues of suspended solids and phosphorous both cost-effectively and sustainably.

What makes them more sustainable than traditional sand filters?

The Flocell XFM Filters provide 100 times more retention capacity than sand filters.
They use 50% less power than sand filters.
80% less water is wasted in comparison to sand filters.
The filter media has a minimum 20-year life.

There is no hydraulic load, clogging, downtime, or media replacements, meaning the Flocell XFM filters are a very low maintenance system.

Air Clean Technology

Key to the Flocell XFM’s innovation is the patented AirClean technology, replacing the traditional backwash cycle: The system cleans the solids from the media with air using the low-energy blower package, which comes as part of the installation. The media pack is vigorously agitated, shifting the dirt and sludge from the media to water, which is then drained for disposal.

Using air significantly reduces energy consumption and the amount of water lost while producing a highly concentrated and manageable effluent stream that infrequently needs removal.

During cleaning, only a single volume of water filter capacity is discharged. Long, prolonged periods between clean cycles are possible due to its high retention capacity, saving water and power.

Flocell XFM Fines Media

Flocell XFM Fines Media has been specially designed to enhance the mechanical filtration capabilities of Flocell XFM Fines Filters. This patented filter media features a unique shape and profile, with a series of fins on its outer surface that effectively capture fine particles.

The upwards flow of the filter ensures the media provides enough resistance to trap solids where they build in the media. The hydraulic properties, however, are not impacted, so flows are maintained and energy usage remains the same.

Pre-Filtration for Carbon filters

In liquid-phase treatments, solids must be removed before sending the liquid through a carbon filter, or you will backwash the carbon regularly. This step significantly extends the lifespan of the carbon bed. The Flocell XFM static-bed media filter can be optimised specifically for solids removal before liquid-phase carbon filtration. It effectively prevents blockages caused by colloidal particles, reduces the need for backwashing, and enhances the overall longevity of the carbon bed. These two systems work very well together
