The key to successful winter crops
Nova Q have a range of cutting-edge products to support agriculture here in Ireland, from bacteria treatments to foliar feeds.
We stopped in with Luke Moran for his tips on getting through the Winter ahead:
Last winter was one of the wettest on record, and crops across the country suffered.
As winter crops sit with cold and wet feet for their first few months, its crucial to ensure that they go into the New Year with strong root structures and good plant health. This will help improve nutrient uptake and improve spring growth.
Late sown winter wheats after potatoes will need to get the best start as soil temperatures begin to rise next spring.
Access to nutrients is crucial in providing the best possible start and rapid root development is a key to achieving this.
Phosphorus (P) is the most important of these nutrients for effective rooting. Phosphite is highly effective in producing large root structures. Large root structures allow for more spatial dominance for taking in water and absorbing soil trace elements which are so crucial to gain a quality yield.
Nutrel’s Phostar is an excellent foliar phosphite spray, specially formulated with Manganese (Mn) and Magnesium (Mg) for use on all cereal crops. Its easily translocated through the plant and into the roots.
Other products such as Nutrel’s K-mag and K-man can relieve winter stresses on young cereals. Get in touch to discuss further.
Key benefits include:
- Low application rate - 1-1.5L/ha (when there is enough plant biomass to hit);
- Formulation of P, Mn and Mg can be easily taken up by the plant - proven to accelerate root growth;
- Liquid form easily mixed in any tank formulation.
